Walter Shoots Straight to Win 14.1 State Championship

National Championship Series 14.1 / Latham, NY

by Lea Andrews

A small but strong field of 12 men gathered at Diamond 8 Billiards in Latham, NY, May 16 for the New York 14.1 State Championship, a qualifying event for the NCS National Championship in Parsippany, NJ. After a long day of undefeated play, Tom Walter of Long Island came out on top, earning paid entry into the event.

On his way to the hot seat, Walter made his way through Chuck Hill, Martin Kristy, and Kevin Vidal to meet up with Lyn Weschler of Rochester, NY, who’d gone through Jeff Smolen and Hal Hughes after receiving a bye in the first round. Walter sent Weschler west with a score of 100-27.

Over on the one-loss side, Smolen and Hughes were fighting the field for the chance for a rematch with Weschler in the semifinals. When the two met up, it was Smolen who earned the rematch, putting Hughes in fourth with a score of 100-86. Weschler wanted his own rematch with Walter, though, and he got it by sending Smolen to third place with a score of 100-79.
