Vines and Champion Split One-Pocket Win
Open One-Pocket Tournament / Rocky Mount, NC
by InsidePOOL Staff
Dot’s Cue Club in Rocky Mount, NC, hosted another great turnout for their Fall Edition Open One-Pocket Tournament Sept 22-23. This event sported the strongest field yet and provided fans with plenty of great match-ups to watch during the two days.
Local player Ray Vines made it to the winners’-bracket finals against Michael Newsome, who traveled all the way from Martinez, GA, for this event. After getting a bye in the first round, Vines won sets against Steven Page 3-2, Jerry McLeod 3-1, and Danny Pollard 3-1 to get to the finals. Newsome’s road to the finals went through “Cadillac Ed” 3-1, who came down from Maryland; Wade Crane 3-2, and Brian White 3-1 from Greenville, SC, to earn his spot in the winners’ finals.
The winners’-bracket final was all it was cracked up to be and turned out to be the best-played match of the weekend. After Newsome went up 2 games to none, Vines came storming back and won the hard-fought set 3-2 to claim the hot seat.
In the one-loss side, Sydney Champion of Goldsboro, NC, defeated early favorite White 3-2 to earn a spot in the semifinals against Newsome. Champion also won that match 3-2 to score a meeting with Vines in the finals. However, both players decided to split the pot in lieu of battling out this true double-elimination event.
