Number One Seed Ousted at Women’s Billiard Event

The final 16 in the single-elimination phase of the WPBA Great Lakes Classic is set, with the event to whittle down the field still further to the final 4 returning Sunday for the semifinal matches after Saturday’s quarterfinal matches.

The tour’s number-one-ranked player, Monica Webb, was eliminated after back-to-back losses. Her first loss came from Korea’s Yu Ram Cha 9-6, and once on the one-loss side, Webb was ousted 9-5 by Kim Shaw. Cha’s next opponent will be in the form of Karen Corr of Ireland.

Austria’s Jasmin Ouschan delivered Corr to the one-loss side 9-6 to reach the final 16, where Corr fought her way back through Helena Thornfeldt 9-4 to make it back to the final 16. Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee had troubles of her own, suffering a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Ga Young Kim in the third round. Lee made it back to the final 16 with a 9-5 showing over Dawn Hopkins. Ouschan will next play Ga Young Kim.

England’s Kelly and Allison Fisher are still undefeated, and they will play each other in the quarterfinal round. A. Fisher bested Gerda “G-Force” Hofstatter in the third round 9-4, while K. Fisher dealt My-Hanh Lac a 9-5 defeat. In the fourth, A. Fisher eliminated Lee in a hill-hill thriller, and K. Fisher ousted Julie Kelly 9-3.

The undefeated Xiaoting Pan and Vivian “The Texas Tornado” Villareal will meet in the quarterfinals. Pan sent Melissa Herndon to the west side 9-2 and then ousted Laura Smith 9-1, while Villareal defeated Tracie Hines 9-7 and then Kim Shaw 9-7.
