Monk Still Queen of the Bay Area Billiards

Tiger Bay Area Amateur Tour / Palm Harbor, FL

Michell Monk topped the points on the Bay Area Amateur Tour before their June 13 event, and after an undefeated day of play that day, Monk remained the points leader. Although local APA championships took several regular ladies from the field, the 12 who gathered for the mixed 8-ball and 9-ball, $240-added event at Stix Billiards in Palm Harbor, FL, were strong and ready for action.

Monk moved through the field and arrived in the winners’ side final four to face Connie Mago, while Helene Caukin faced Sabra MacArthur-Beahn. Monk and Caukin sent Mago and MacArthur-Beahn to the left side of the bracket with scores of 7-2 and 5-2, respectively.

Meanwhile, Nicole Winters was making her way through the one-loss side, taking down with a score of 4-4 powerhouse Leslee Davis-Blaikie, who, as the highest-ranked player in the field, needed eight games in this match. Winters then greeted MacArthur-Beahn as Barbara Ellis met up with Mago, and while Winters went on with a score of 4-2, Ellis fell to Mago 4-3. Winters kept up her streak against Mago, putting her in fourth with a score of 4-2 before meeting up with Caukin, whom Monk had bested in the match for the hot seat 6-3.

With the score at 3-1 in the one-loss semifinal match, Winters was on the hill, while Caukin, who was racing to 6, still needed five games. Caukin won four games in a row, putting the match at hill-hill, and was set to break and run the last 8-ball game, even pocketing the winning 8, but when she scratched, the game and the set went to Winters.

Having just come off a tough match, Winters faced another extremely tough competitor. She marked up game one, but it proved to be her only win, as Monk dominated the rest of the match, taking eight in a row to claim first.
