Mollien Captures World Pool Masters Trick Shot
Rob Mollien of Holland became the first ever Dutchman to lift the highly prestigious PartyPoker.net World Pool Trick Shot Masters title following a performance of the highest quality as he closed the show at the Hotel Zuiderduin.
The 32 year-old from Amsterdam is a professional magician by trade but he avoided his trade mark tricks in favour of a succession of pure skill shots that went almost to perfection, to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd.
Mollien finished off with an eye-popping finale that involved spearing his cue through a pack of flying cards and an impaling a card pre-selected by a member of the audience.
The judging panel of commentator Jim Wych, referee Michaela Tabb and Dutch Federation Chief Cakti Aswan made the Dutchman a clear winner with a ten-point margin separating him from nearest rival, Lukasz Szywala of Poland.
Szywala’s piece de resistance involved playing the cue ball through a blown up balloon to make an outrageous pot up table.
Other highlights included Frenchman Vincent Facquet’s normally polished routine and Canada’s Tyler Edey’s deadpan humour.
Of course, the world of trickshots can be cruel and when things start to unravel there is no place to hide but in the end the night belonged to Mollien who will surely be back to defend his title next year.
