McDermott All American Tour at Spike’s Bar Grill

The seventh stop of the 2007/2008 McDermott All American Tour, produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS), was hosted at Spike’s Bar Grill in Faribault, MN, on the weekend of October 20-21. The $1,500 added event drew eighty-one billiards players in both a women’s division and men’s division, each playing a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes.
The men’s division featured a full 64-player field, and John Meyer (Minneapolis, MN) ran undefeated to the finals. In the hot-seat match, Meyer routed Charlie Garza (Albert Lea, MN) 5-0. Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, Meyer outplayed Tim Brandt (Rochester, MN), while Garza eclipsed Dan Voeller (Apple Valley, MN). In the B-side bracket Steve Brekke (Savage, MN) ousted Tim Tonjum (Faribault, MN) at 7th place, while Larry Taylor (Shoreview, MN) eliminated Garrett Schaar (St. Paul, MN) at the same placement. Voeller and Brandt then dispatched Brekke and Taylor respectively into 5th place. In the loser’s semifinals Brandt toppled Voeller 5-1, and Tim Brandt kept his hot hand in the B-side finals by ousting Charlie Garza 5-3. In the tourney finals, Tim Brandt kept his momentum to overhaul John Meyer in two sets by 5-0, 5-3 margins!
The women’s division featured seventeen (17) players, and Robin Wellman (E. Bethel, MN) claimed the hot seat by turning away Deanna Kennedy (Mankato, MN) 4-2 in the A-bracket finals. In the A-bracket semifinals Wellman had earlier outpointed Christie Lerum (Pine Island, MN), while Kennedy edged Bonnie Biers (Rochester, MN). The B-bracket quarterfinals showcased Mollie Pearl (Vadnais Heights, MN) eliminating Christy Lerum and Marissa Herum (River Falls, WI) ending Bonnie Bier’s run. The B-bracket semifinals had Mollie Pearl edging out Herum 4-3; and Pearl went on to also clip Deanna Kennedy in the B-bracket finals to earn a shot at undefeated Robin Wellman. The tourney finals proved competitive, as Pearl defeated Wellman in the first set 4-3, forcing a second set in which Wellman took the title by a 4-2 margin!
By virtue of Tim Brandt and Robin Wellman being the highest-finishing ACS members in their respective events, both qualified for a free singles entry into the 2008 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the McDermott All American Tour. The Tour continues on Saturday, October 27, when one event will be showcased – a $500 added 8-ball event at Cue Masters Billiards in Dubuque, IA (contact Bill Kramer at 563-557-0875).
