Mike Gulyassy battled back from three racks down in the final match to overtake John DiToro and win the Seniors Championship the weekend of July 18-20. Hosted by Grady’s in Lexington, SC, the $500-added event drew 18 total entrants.
Gulyassy was the last man standing in the winners’ side Sunday. He’d defeated Bobby Hibbitts as Gary Kaye was sending Billy Tyler to the one-loss side. In the hot seat match that followed, Gulyassy sent Kaye to the semifinals with an 11-8 victory.
On the one-loss side, DiToro was battling back from an early round defeat and dropped Hibbitts into fifth place, as Randy Epperson did likewise to Tyler. DiToro bested Epperson 11-4 in the quarterfinal match to face Kaye in the semifinals. He allowed Kaye only four racks, picking up speed as he entered the finals versus Gulyassy.
The two struggled back and forth to the midway point of the match. Tied at 5-5, DiToro surged ahead by three racks to reach the hill first. Gulyassy battled back to make it double-hill, took a deep breath after coming within inches of scratching during that final rack, and finally won it.
Results:
1st Mike Gulyassy
