Matt Clatterbuck has finally posted a win after finishing in the top ten of all but one tournament that the competed in during 2008.

Matt Clatterbuck, who’s finished among the top 10 in all but one of the tournaments in which he has participated in 2008 (nine in all), logged his first tournament win of the  year, going undefeated in the Virginia Billiards Association’s first-ever statewide tournament. The $2,600 prize pool drew 42 entrants to Q-Master Billiards in Virginia Beach September 13-14.

Clatterbuck defeated Larry Kressel twice to earn the tournament’s top spot—once among the winners’ side final four 7-5 and then in the finals. While Clatterbuck was sending Kressel west for a later showdown, Curtis Coleman was at work against tournament director David Frank. Frank joined Kressel on the one-loss side, as Coleman advanced 7-3 to the hot seat match. Coleman joined them both when Clatterbuck sent him over 7-4 to the semifinals.

Kressel and Frank moved over to the one-loss side to face Eric Moore and Josh Brothers, respectively, with Kressel advancing 7-5 and Brothers besting Frank 7-2. Kressel defeated Brothers in the quarterfinal match and dropped Coleman into third place with a 7-3 win.

Kressel used the momentum he’d gained to take an early 3-1 lead in the race-to-11 finals, but Clatterbuck fought back, taking the next three out of four to knot the match at 4-4. Clatterbuck surged ahead to take the next 5 racks, and though Kressel hung on to win two more, Clatterbuck did the same and won 11-6.
