Caribbean Islands Readies for International Billiards Tour
For quite some time now, the billiard associations from the Caribbean Islands of Aruba, Curacao, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic have been brainstorming on the creation of our own international billiards tour. Long hours of Internet communication and discussions between the abovementioned countries have concluded that an International Caribbean Tour and/or a possible Caribbean Confederation is truly feasible at this moment.
To jump-start with this idea, the Dominican Republic Billiards Federation is holding the 1st International Billiards Tournament – J B Cup, this coming weekend in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.
Four Caribbean countries (Aruba, Curacao, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic) and an invited South American country (Argentina) will be gathering this weekend to jump-start the Caribbean International Tour. Thirty-two players have been invited to participate in this event with $3,700-added money to entice the journey to the Dominican Republic. Payouts will include prize money for 12 of the 32 invited players.
If we take into consideration that the Caribbean Basin includes such countries as Cuba, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands, U.S Virgin Islands, Anguilla, St. Christopher and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad Tobago, and the Netherlands Antilles (Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire), plus the North Atlantic Islands of the Bahamas (Nassau, Turks and Caicos Islands), we really cannot disregard the possibility of forming a true International Caribbean Confederation of Pocket Billiards.
Given the cultural background and political ties of each of the aforementioned Caribbean countries, (France, United Kingdom, United States, Netherlands, etc.), we have to conclude that a true international field of players could easily participate in future events within our region.
We will also be seeking sponsorships to our proposed tour. Interested companies may contact the undersigned via e-mail at fedbillarpr[at]hotmail or telephone at 787-610-6129.
Final results of this first international Caribbean event will be provided at the conclusion of this tournament.
