Sheldon and Davis First-Time KF Cue Winners
KF Cues Tour / Jacksonville, FL

by Lea Andrews

With new winners Danny Sheldon in the amateur division and Mike Davis in the open division, it was a time for firsts at the KF Cues Tour season opener, during which the amateur players were rewarded for their seasons of high attendance by receiving more added money and a discounted entry into Sunday’s open division. For the first time in the tour’s history, the $1,000-added open division with 48 players (including 22 players from the amateur event), drew more competitors than the $1,000-added amateur division, which drew 47 players October 3-4 to Bankshot Billiards in Jacksonville, FL.

After falling to Walter Blacker 7-3 in the first round, Sheldon had his work cut out for him as he took match after match on the left side of the bracket. Meanwhile, the final four on the winners’ side emerged. Mike Delawder rode a strong 7-2 win over Lincoln Seiffert into the hot seat match, where he met Chip Dickerson. Dickerson, who was coming off a 7-5 victory over Bobby Garza, managed only five himself against Delawder.

On the one-loss side, Sheldon got by Aaron Bolling and Trevor Moore 5-3 and Seiffert 5-2 to face Han Berber, who’d ousted Garza 6-4. After a shut-out win over Berber, Sheldon moved on to the semifinals against Dickerson, whom he put in third 5-2 to earn his spot in the finals against Delawder.

The two stayed even at first in the single race-to-8 final match, tying up at 3 apiece before Delawder pulled ahead 5-3. Delawder had come close enough to victory for Sheldon, though, who took five straight racks for the win.

In the open division, “Iron Mike” Davis earned the hot seat match with a 7-2 win over Butch Croft. There he faced Richard Broumpton, who’d gotten by tournament director Tony Crosby 7-5. In a tight match, Davis fell just short, moving west for the semifinals 7-6.

On the left side of the bracket, local player Dave Grossman was making waves with wins over Wesley White 6-4, Qi Liu 6-1, and Crosby 6-4, to meet in the quarterfinals George McLanahan. McLanahan, who was coming off wins over Jim Sandaler 6-4, Jimmy Garza 6-1 and Croft 6-3, managed only one game against Grossman, who moved on to a rematch in the semis against Davis. Having edged out Grossman in an early match 7-6, Davis held him to four games in a race to 6 to get back to Broumpton in the finals.

In the single race-to-9 final set, Davis pulled out ahead 5-3 and 7-4, and though Broumpton managed to get within two once more at 7-5, that was as close as he came. Davis won four in a row for his first win on the KF Cues Tour.
