Morlan In Stroke and Undefeated in Tampa

Tiger Bay Area Amateur Tour / Tampa, FL

by Lea Andrews

Strokers Billiards in Tampa, FL, hosted the fifth stop of the Tiger Bay Area Amateur Tour May 16. Out of the 13 ladies who arrived for the $260-added event, it was Melissa Morlan who emerged as the winner, claiming first place and $225.

The match for the hot seat featured the top two tour points leaders in a 6-4 race in the handicapped format with Michell Monk, currently first in points, going to 6 and Morlan going to 4. Morlan managed to hold Monk to five games, sending her west to face tour operator Stephanie Mitchell in a 6-5 race. Mitchell, who’d just put Mary Pendleton-Brown into fourth with a score of 5-2, fought hard against the sharp-shooting Monk, but she found herself snookered on the 6 ball in the final game of the hill-hill match after her safety on the five ball went awry. Although she managed to kick the 6 ball into a pocket, she scratched, giving Monk ball in hand to run out for the win and seize the opportunity to face Morlan once again.

In this true double-elimination event, Monk would have to win two sets to take first, and she began her rematch with Morlan by leaping out ahead 4-1, but Morlan was not to be held down. She notched up a win to put the score at 4-2 with both ladies needing two games. Monk reached the hill first, but Morlan joined her there the next game and then went on to take the final rack for her second tour win of the season.
